Root canal treatment is a dental procedure that treats a severely damaged or infected tooth. During this process, the dentist removes the infected nerve (the innermost part of the tooth) and cleans and disinfects the inside. Then they seal the space with a root canal filling to prevent further infection. This procedure is typically done to save a tooth that might otherwise need to be extracted. After root canal treatment, a dental crown is often advised to provide protection for the tooth.

Although many people find the prospect of root canal treatment alarming, modern endodontic treatments make it possible to clean up infected tooth pulp without causing you pain or even significant discomfort.
